(NaturalNews) A new explosion rocked the Fukushima No. 2 reactor today, says Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO). That explosion caused new damage to the containment vessel, resulting in a rise in radiation being leaked into the environment (http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/world/2011-03/15/c_13778928.htm).
This news of the worsening situation comes on the heels of some good news in the nuclear catastrophe: TEPCO has been able to restore grid power to buildings 5 and 6, which also house enormous quantities of stored fuel. Neither of these buildings was considered the primary threat in the first place, but it is at least a hopeful sign that TEPCO might have a chance at preventing a meltdown (http://www.smh.com.au/world/headway-as-fukushima-pumps-restart-20110320-1c2b4.html).
Japanese crews are now working on an attempt to restore the functionality of the pumps that circulate water to cool the fuel rods. Those pumps are reportedly working in buildings 5 and 6, but no one even knows if the pumps are functional in buildings 2, 3 or 4. (They may have been damaged in the explosions that rocked the site.)
To make matters even worse, it appears that the cooling pool in reactor No. 4 has a leak and won’t hold water. As the Sydney Morning Herald reports, “The pool at reactor No.4 has the hottest spent fuel and is thought to have either holes in the pool or another leak that is allowing water to run out. It is thus imperative to cool those heat sources first.”
Japan’s government raises “safe” limit of radiation exposure
Japanese workers who have been at the forefront of all these efforts are dwindling in numbers as they’re pulled off the front lines due to excessive radiation exposure. In order to cope with this, the Japanese government simply increased the allowable dose of radiation it now considers “safe” for workers. It used to be that 100 millisieverts was considered the maximum allowable level, but Japan has now arbitrarily raised that number to 250 millisieverts for no justifiable reason. (Radiation didn’t suddenly become less dangerous overnight, unless the laws of physics suddenly changed and nobody told us about it…)
About the overall status of the situation, Hidehiko Nishiyama, the deputy-general at Japan’s Nuclear Safety Agency, said “We are making progress … [but] we shouldn’t be too optimistic.” (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/mar/20/japan-nuclear-crisis-fukushima-workers)
Today Japanese officials also announced that the Fukushima nuclear power plant would have to be “scrapped” and could never be restarted. The official plan now is to eventually bury the entire plant in sand and concrete — a plan that will of course be laughed at by the next tsunami to strike the northeast coast of Japan.
On the food side of the issue, Taiwan has now confirmed that it is importing radioactive fava beans from Japan, but says the radiation level is too low to cause concern. Other Asian nations that import food from Japan are all scanning those imports for radiation.
Where do we stand with Fukushima?
The bottom line in all this? The Fukushima catastrophe is nowhere near resolved, but there are hopeful signs that progress may yet be made. The restoration of grid electricity to reactors 5 and 6 is a step in the right direction, but the real question is whether it can be restored to reactor No. 3, where the extremely dangerous “MOX” fuel resides (http://www.naturalnews.com/031736_plutonium_enriched_uranium.html). That’s the nuclear fuel known to be 2,000,000 times more deadly than enriched uranium. Even a miniscule release of material from that facility (just a few grams) would pollute the region for literally tens of thousands of years.
Reactor No. 3 is still in an extremely dangerous emergency situation. TEPCO officials have said they may have to vent radioactive steam from it in order to relieve the mounting pressure. This action was narrowly averted today but could be invoked at any time.
Also today: The Japanese government openly admitted it should have distributed potassium iodide earlier to protect people from the cancers caused by radiation exposure. But instead of handing out the KI pills, Japan’s government did nothing for three days following the initial explosion and tried to downplay the situation.
That’s what governments do these days, it seems: Instead of helping their people cope with disaster, they pretend there’s no problem and leave people to die. The Ostrich Syndrome appears to be an international problem, as the U.S. government suffers from it, too.
Stay tuned to NaturalNews for more updates as the Fukushima situation unfolds. We remain hopeful that a fuel rod meltdown can be avoided, but right now there is no evidence-based reason to conclude that will be achieved. It’s still a desperate, hour-by-hour effort that is nowhere close to being under control.

(NaturalNews) It is now being revealed that US Senators slipped up in a big way when passing the Food Safety Modernization Act on Tuesday: They added what are effectively “new taxes” into the bill, and according to the U.S. Constitution, only the House of Representatives can initiate legislation requiring new taxes.
Thus, the House is now obliged to give this food safety legislation the so-called “blue slip,” meaning that it rejects the law and sends it back to the Senate for yet another vote. This would take time and effort, of course, and the Democrats have very little of either remaining in their lame duck session.
As explained on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_slip):
“This blue-slipping procedure, done by an order of the House, is routinely completed to enforce its interpretation that the House is the sole body to introduce revenue or appropriations legislation. The failure of the House to consider the legislation means it cannot become a law. This tactic has historically proven to be of great use to the House and, as a practical matter, the Senate does not introduce tax or revenue measures to avoid a blue slip.”
In other words, the House wants to remain the sole originator of all new taxes and will therefore need to “blue slip” S.510 in order to slap the hands of Senators who are trying to enact their own new taxes under the bill.
S.510 may be dead in the water
The upshot of this is that this fight is not yet over. Unless the House makes an unprecedented exception to this blue slip rule, this legislation will apparently need to go back to the Senate floor for another vote.
This story was first reported by RollCall.com (http://www.rollcall.com/news/-201012-1.html) which says, “The debacle could prove to be a major embarrassment for Senate Democrats, who sought Tuesday to make the relatively unknown bill a major political issue by sending out numerous news releases trumpeting its passage.” (http://www.rollcall.com/news/-201012-1.html)
According to Roll Call, “The blue slip could lead to one of two likely outcomes. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) could simply drop the issue and let the next session of Congress start from scratch…”
“Or he could try to force the issue in the Senate after the House passes a new version of the bill. But in order to do that and still tackle the other issues, he would need a unanimous consent agreement to limit debate.”
But unanimous consent is impossible thanks to the heroic efforts of Senator Tom Coburn (R-Okla) who has stood firm on his belief that this bill is too large, too expensive and puts too much of a burden on American farmers.
If this assessment is correct, it looks like S.510 is now dead in the water and cannot be resurrected until the next session of Congress in which there will be far fewer Democrats (there was not a single Democrat in the US Senate who opposed the bill). (http://www.naturalnews.com/030577_Senate_Bill_510_voting_record.html)

(NaturalNews) If there’s one thing to give thanks for this year, it’s the fact that the Senate floor vote on the so-called “Food Safety Modernization Act” has been delayed until after the Senate’s Thanksgiving recess. This gives all of us — the commonsense opponents of S.510 who don’t want the FDA having authority over raw milk, seeds and backyard gardens — another week to flood the offices of U.S. Senators with calls, faxes and emails that express opposition to the bill.
The jury is still out on the Tester-Hagan Amendment which would exempt small farmers from some of the more tyrannical requirements under the law. If this amendment were adopted, it would substantially improve the bill, but even with this amendment, the bill is just another overreaching expansion of Big Government into yet another area of incompetence. (If the government can’t run health care worth a darn, how are they supposed to manage the entire food supply?)
The 1099 paperwork amendment
As part of this debate over the safety of the food supply, Sen Mike Johanns is making a courageous attempt to kill the new, idiotic 1099 reporting requirement that would require every person running a small business in America to get 1099 forms from Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Costco, Amazon.com or any other retailer where they’ve spent over $600 in the previous year.
This absolute nightmare of 1099 paperwork was passed as part of the Obamacare health care reform legislation earlier this year (http://www.naturalnews.com/028854_1099_small_business.html). It will turn America’s small business owners into paperwork pack rats and criminalize anyone who doesn’t spent several hundred hours a year chasing 1099 forms from corporations that are almost certain to refuse to give them to you. This is the government’s way of penalizing small business owners in America and killing off yet more jobs as a way to destroy the economy.
This 1099 recall is the only real positive thing being considered in the Food Safety and Modernization Act. And as you’ve probably noticed, it has nothing to do with food.
What comes next for S.510
On Monday, November 29, a vote will be taken on the Harkin amendment, which is merely a rephrasing of the bill with some new wording that came out of committee.
After that, a vote is planned for the bill itself, meaning S.510 could be passed into law on November 29th.
Additional debate time might be invoked for various amendments to the bill, as there are some motions still pending (Johanns, Baucus, Coburn). So it’s not a given thing that a final vote will happen on Nov 29th.
Watch NaturalNews.com for more updates on this bill throughout next week. We will continue to rally opposition to the bill.
I’m not against some commonsense improvements in food safety, but to give Big Brother yet more control over seed saving, backyard food production and small organic farms is an outright disaster, not an improvement.
Besides, as we now know, the problem with e.coli, salmonella and other pathogens in the food supply is really a problem with factory animal farms — notably cattle and chicken operations. That’s where these pathogens come from (e.coli grows in the intestines of animals), so cleaning up factory animal farms is the answer to food safety, not invoking the FDA and its food irradiation agenda.
Why not hand the FDA more power over our food supply?
It’s amazing to see that people are lining up to grant more power to the FDA — the very agency that has killed more Americans through its corruption, fraud and negligence than any other organization in the history of the nation.
I’ve written a full story on this important fact, which details how the FDA is far more dangerous than terrorists and that putting the FDA in charge of our national food supply can only lead to disaster. Read that story at: http://www.naturalnews.com/030461_Senate_Bill_510_Food_Safety.html

(NaturalNews) Proponents of Senate Bill 510 — the Food Safety and Modernization Act — keep trying to claim that we need the FDA to protect us from tainted eggs, lettuce, onions and spinach. On the surface, it seems like a reasonable argument: No one should ever die from unsafe food in America, right?
But to accomplish a net reduction in deaths, you’d need to grant power over the food supply to some organization that actually respects human life… and the FDA is not that organization. In fact, as we have documented here on NaturalNews over the last seven years, the FDA is responsible for far more deaths of Americans than all the terrorist events in the history of the world — combined!
How is that so?
How the FDA has killed millions of Americans
Well, for starters, the FDA has a long and rather dubious history of keeping dangerous, deadly drugs on the market even after it knows those drugs are killing people. The FDA has even gone out of its way to ignore critical evidence about dangerous drugs in order to appease its Big Pharma clients and keep those high-profit drugs selling while people are dying.
To see one example of this, look at the history of Vioxx — a drug the FDA kept on the market while it racked up well over 60,000 deaths according to the FDA’s own scientists! (http://www.naturalnews.com/011401_Dr_David_Graham_the_FDA.html)
As Dr David Graham said in an interview, “The FDA is responsible for 140,000 heart attacks and 60,000 dead Americans. That’s as many people as were killed in the Vietnam War. Yet the FDA points the finger at me and says, Well, this guy’s a rat, you can’t trust him,’ but nobody is calling them to account. Congress isn’t calling them to account.”
If you want more evidence of the FDA’s outrageous disregard for human life, look at the agency’s handling of the drug Ketek (http://www.naturalnews.com/019698.html). Or check out how the FDA kept the liver-damaging drug Rezulin on the market while diabetic Americans were dropping dead.
The FDA’s own scientists have repeatedly accused the agency of engaging in routine intimidation of scientists who try to call attention to dangerous products (http://www.naturalnews.com/025298_the_FDA_scientists.html).
The FDA censors natural remedies that could save lives
On top of all that corruption and fraud leading to negligent deaths caused by the FDA, this agency also censors the scientific truth about natural remedies and nutritional supplements that could save millions of lives each year. The FDA won’t, for example, allow vitamin D supplement companies to tell the truth about how vitamin D prevents cancer or how vitamin D prevents the flu and makes seasonal flu vaccines obsolete (http://www.naturalnews.com/029760_vitamin_D_influenza.html).
The FDA also won’t allow any supplement companies to tell the truth about their natural remedies for preventing or even reversing diabetes, heart disease, breast cancer and more.
In doing this, the FDA is complicit in the deaths of at least 250,000 Americans each year. According to the groundbreaking 2003 medical report Death by Medicine, by Drs Gary Null, Carolyn Dean, Martin Feldman, Debora Rasio and Dorothy Smith, 783,936 people in the United States die every year from conventional medicine mistakes. The FDA has a hand in at least one-third of those deaths, mostly from its willful corruption and fraud in the world of deadly pharmaceuticals, which have proven to be far more deadly than terrorists (http://www.naturalnews.com/009278.html).
If you do the math on all this, you are forced to reach some startling mathematical conclusions:
• The FDA is more dangerous than all the terrorists and terror events in the history of the United States.
• The FDA has killed more Americans than the entire Vietnam War.
• Even more than that, over the last 20 years the FDA has killed more Americans than the total number who died in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War and even the Civil War — combined!
• The FDA is the single most deadly agency that has ever existed in the history of the United States. It is responsible for more body bags, more funerals, more pain and suffering than even the Department of Defense!
• The FDA does not value human life. It has no compassion for real people. It is driven by politics and money, and it answers to the demands of powerful corporations who control its agenda (http://www.naturalnews.com/019497.html).
So now, let me get this straight. With Senate Bill 510 we are going to hand over control over the food supply to the most nefarious, corrupt and deadly agency that has ever existed in the history of the United States of America?
FDA could outlaw all raw vegetables
The FDA has killed more people than the CIA, FBI, ATF and DEA combined. This agency is technically responsible for the negligent homicide of countless American men, women, children and senior citizens. It has stood by and allowed modern psychiatry to drug our children into violent behavior. It has censored the truth about nutrition and natural remedies, and it has enforced a campaign of nutritional ignorance among the American people, making sure that virtually all competition to Big Pharma’s patented drugs is completely wiped out (or criminalized).
The FDA has criminalized your raw milk, turning farmers into felons. The FDA once ordered the burning of recipe books containing stevia recipes as part of its effort to outlaw this natural sweetener (in order to protect aspartame profits). (http://www.naturalnews.com/001552.html)
And now the U.S. Congress wants this agency in charge of your food?
What madness is this?
We’re going to take the largest killer in the history of America and give it the power to control the growing of foods, the saving of seeds and even the operations of small family farms?
Can you imagine what the FDA is going to do with that kind of power? Trust me: It won’t be pretty. It may even be fatal. I can just see this agency outlawing all vegetables unless they’re irradiated. They might outlaw raw food and require all food be pasteurized. They could ban not just raw milk but even raw broccoli.
Sound crazy? Sure it does! But so does the idea of raw milk being criminalized in America, too. America was raised on raw milk. What do you think Thomas Jefferson drank at his farm? What do you think kept the pioneers alive in the harsh Midwest winters?
If the FDA can outlaw raw milk, they can outlaw anything. And Senate Bill 510 would give them all the power they need to do this.
Never give a psychopath explosives
It’s a dangerous deal with the devil, of course. Handing the FDA power over the food supply is like giving a violent psycho access to military-grade explosives. The net result can only be catastrophic and deadly.
I’m all for the idea of “safe food,” but not if it involves taking the most dangerous government agency in the history of America and putting it in charge of the way we grow food, store seeds, harvest crops and package food products.
Do we need to “modernize” our food creation systems in America? Sure we do, but not at the cost of making us all victims of a dangerous, corrupt and downright disastrously managed U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
And besides, virtually all the contamination of food we’re seeing today is due to factory animal farming runoff. That’s where e.coli comes from, by the way. E.coli is an intestinal pathogen and plants don’t have intestines. It can only be harbored in animals. (http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_20002.cfm)
So the problem with our food supply is not that the FDA doesn’t yet have enough power; it’s that we have abusive, cruel and ridiculously unclean factory animal farms operating in America that are contaminating the vegetables. If you really want to clean up the food supply, just crack down on the factory animal farms and let the veggie growers get back to work doing what they do best: Growing healthful, nutrient-rich vegetables that help keep America healthy.

(NaturalNews) Your local hospital just might be more of a death trap than an actual health care facility. A new report issued by the Office of Inspector General at the Health and Human Services Department (HHS) says that every month roughly 134,000 hospital patients experience some type of adverse event during their stays. And about 15,000 of them die every month due to various medical and surgical errors.
According to the report, such adverse events include surgery mistakes, medication dosage errors, improper care protocols, and transmission of infection due to filthy conditions. In fact, patients are often admitted to hospitals in healthier condition than when they leave (if they even do), and much of the time their health declines are a result of avoidable medical errors.
Many hospitals are also hotbeds of infectious diseases like Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), the infamous hospital “superbug” that kills roughly 48,000 people every year (http://www.naturalnews.com/028441_superbugs_infections.html).
Nearly 50 percent of all adverse event problems are avoidable, according to the report. But since there is no tracking system in place to address the problems and work towards fixing them, many hospitals continue to make them without consequence — and the vast majority of hospital patients have no idea about the significant risks they face.
“This report shows that hospital patients are being harmed by medical errors at an alarming rate,” explained Lisa McGiffert from Consumers Union, in a statement. “Unfortunately, most Americans have no way of knowing whether their hospital is doing a good job preventing medical errors.”
At this time, there is no solid way to determine where hospitals rank in terms of overall safety performance because no reporting system exists for tracking this information. But the report urges both the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services to work towards implementing one.

(NaturalNews) We’ve just released a new, short animation exposing the truth about the dangers of statin drugs. Called “The Truth About Statin Drugs,” this public service announcement animation quotes research published in the British Medical Journal which reveals that statin drugs cause liver dysfunction, acute kidney failure, cataracts and extreme muscle weakness, among other serious side effects.
The animation video is available on www.NaturalNews.TV at:
http://naturalnews.tv/v.asp?v=2D691570EF29BA0517C767D6ED6667C0
I created this public service video with the help of a voice talent professional who did the narration voiceover. The character “hmmm?” sound effect is actually my own voice.
This was animated by our in-house animator who also animated the Vaccine Zombie music video (http://naturalnews.tv/v.asp?v=6D05173308E7F4169D7259EB85CDF522).
People don’t realize how dangerous statin drugs can really be
The reason I chose to produce this animation is because so many people are on statin drugs and yet they have no idea how harmful they are. I work out quite a bit, and recently at the gym, I saw three guys working out in a mini boot camp style, and one of the guys just couldn’t hack it. Even though he looked fit, he was completely fatigued after just a few minutes of exercise, he collapsed onto the floor, exhausted.
I immediately suspected this was a statin drug reaction, so I walked over to the guy and asked him if he was taking statins for high cholesterol. He look at me with bewilderment, and then answered, “Yes, I’m on a prescription recommended by my doctor.”
To that, I asked, “Are you aware that the statin drugs are most likely the cause of your fatigue and exhaustion? They cause extreme muscle weakness as one of their side effects.”
The guy seemed astonished. He had never heard that before. Most people have never heard that. Doctors have rarely heard it, too. (They don’t often know the side effects of the drugs they prescribe!)
That’s the point of this animation: To get people to think about what they swallow. Gulping down synthetic chemicals is not the pathway to health. It’s actually a pathway to ongoing disease and medical victimization by Big Pharma and the conventional medical industry. High cholesterol can be very easily normalized through simple changes in diet and exercise, with no dangerous chemical medications needed!
Please share this animation with others. Spread the word about the dangers of statin drugs, and help encourage people to use healing foods, not dangerous chemicals, to support their health.
We have more animations on the way from NaturalNews! And thank you for your continued support of our website, our store and our sponsors. It is your support that allows us to hire an in-house animator and produce these kinds of public service announcement animations.
Lots more to come!

(NaturalNews) After being granted the power to regulate tobacco products for the first time last year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has come up with a new anti-cigarette marketing campaign that the agency hopes will help deter people from smoking. According to a recent New York Times report, the FDA has proposed 36 graphic warning labels it hopes to plaster on cigarette cartons and advertisement billboards in the near future.
The graphics include a picture of corpse feet with the tag line, “Warning: Cigarettes cause fatal lung disease”. And another shows a dead body in a casket with the caption, “Warning: Smoking can kill you”. On the cartons themselves, the proposed warnings are designed to take up half the box. And on billboards, the warnings will cover 20 percent of the overall advertisement.
Similar graphics already appear on cigarette cartons in Europe, where reports indicate that they have resulted in some success. And many laud the U.S. initiative as a large step towards making smoking so unattractive that increasingly fewer Americans will be willing to participate in it. By illustrating the long-term effects of smoking’s consequences, regulators say that young people especially will be less prone to smoke.
According to current statistics, 1,000 new children and teenagers become regular smokers every single day, while 4,000 try it for the first time. And this occurs despite current warning labels that indicate cigarettes cause lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema, and pregnancy problems, leading some to question whether or not the graphics campaign will have much effect.
Even so, Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Kathleen Sebelius praised the proposal as an “important milestone in protecting our children and the health of the American public”, and Matthew L. Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, said it is the “most important change in cigarette health warnings in the history of the United States.”

(NaturalNews) Sugar beet farmers from across the country are bemoaning the court ruling from last October that barred any further plantings of genetically-modified (GM) sugar beets until proper safety studies have been completed. But according to a recent Associated Press (AP) report, Monsanto spin doctors and industry groups have been busy petitioning the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to allow limited, self-monitored plantings of the crop in order to avoid what they say will be the devastation of the domestic sugar market.
Not only Monsanto, but a slew of sugar producer organizations are requesting that the USDA lift the ban so that farmers will have something to plant this year. Even the USDA itself has issued a 365-page report about the alleged need for farmers to be able to plant the RoundUp Ready sugar beets under a “closely monitored permit process intended to prevent contamination of other crops.”
The irony of the proposal is that cross-contamination is one of the reasons why the sugar beets were banned in the first place. The court ruling declared that a proper Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) had to be put together before any further plantings could take place (http://www.naturalnews.com/027209_USDA_sugar_beets.html), and one of the goals of the statement is to determine how the GMO crop affects non-GMO and organic crops.
But growers and Monsanto do not want to wait. Using fear-driven rhetoric about how sugar prices will rise dramatically if plantings do not take place, the various groups are pushing to bypass the ruling and essentially re-legalize the plantings.
According to Lyndsay Cole, spokeswoman for the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), Monsanto provided no details in its request that explained how it planned to “monitor” growers. And when asked, a Monsanto spokesman did not provide an answer.
The USDA is accepting comments on the issue from the public until December 6, 2010. You can submit your comments here:

(NaturalNews) Whether a urologist is salaried or self-employed can make all the difference in how often and under what circumstances he or she orders imaging tests, according to a new study out of the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor. Self-employed urologists tend to be twice as likely to order imaging tests than employed urologists, and researchers believe financial incentives are to blame.
“In the same patient, a medical problem would be evaluated — and perhaps treated — differently by employed versus self-employed urologists,” explained Dr. John M. Hollingsworth, author of the study, to Reuters Health. Since ordering more diagnostic tests means more money for the self-employed urologist, it makes sense that those in this type of practice are more likely to order them, even when their patients do not really need them.
Based on data from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey that included over 37 million outpatient visits to urologists, roughly 80 percent of urologists are self-employed, and more than 20 percent of urology visits involve orders for imaging tests. But about 24 percent of self-employed urologists order imaging for their patients while only 13 percent of salaried urologists do.
Though the majority of the imaging tests ordered were ultrasounds, other types of imaging that involve radiation could be problematic in the long-term for patients who see self-employed urologists, as repeated exposure could cause other health problems. For this reason, some are calling for changes to be made in the way physicians are reimbursed for services in order to curb illegitimate imaging orders.
“With physicians controlling much of the demand for imaging, strategies to affect its use should consider the methods by which providers are compensated,” added Hollingsworth.
